Oriental Art was founded prior to the Second World War by Dr William Cohn in Oxford, UK. The quarterly was associated with Asian Art presently in the collection of the Ashmolean Museum and was the first journal to pioneer publishing on research and discoveries in Asian art history.

In its New Series since c.1948, Oriental Art continues to publish the latest findings by scholars in Central Asian, Chinese, Indian, Japanese, Korean, Middle Eastern and Southeast Asian art, including the sacred art of Asian religions.
